Washington May 6 Admiral Benson told the senate naval investigating committee he did not think he told Sims the United States would be as eager to fight Britain as Germany. He would not deny it under oath. He said the aim was to impress Admiral Sims with the delicacy of the situation when sent to London. Benson said he never expected the United States to fight Germany. He recalled no instruction telling Sims not to let the British pull wool over his eyes. He said in London he warned Sims of possible pressures to favor British shipping and using destroyers at the expense of protecting American ships.

Five people died in Chicago this week from anthrax. Three victims worked at a curled hair factory shuttered by the health board this morning. A shaving brush infection also caused a fatal case.

Boston May 6 Governor Coolidge vetoed the bill permitting the manufacture and sale of two and three quarters percent beer and wine as the legislature passed it by over a two thirds majority it may be enacted over his veto.
A freak tornado struck Weld and Larimer counties in Colorado yesterday afternoon causing about fifty thousand dollars in damage to several houses. No injuries were reported.
Danville May 6 Uncle Joe Cannon was renominated for congress today for the twenty-fifth time.
The Delaware Senate passed the national woman suffrage amendment by eleven to six and sent it to the House which previously defeated a similar resolution. In other news: Dr C M Yater returns from Oklahoma and Texas and notes optimism for Roswell-Comanche Oil Co. Flowers, and local routines include court actions on theft and larceny charges in Eddy County Justice Court.
May 6 dispatches report Carranza with his back to the wall as rebels threaten Mazatlan and Torreon. U.S. destroyers dispatched to Key West signal acute Mexican crisis. Carranza vows to crush rebels though claims no popular support. Negotiations for Torreon surrender are underway and rebel forces advance in Sinaloa state.

May 6 reports Senator Johnson's majority over Hoover surpasses 155000 in San Francisco as early returns indicate a decisive win for Johnson.
President Wilson nominated Mark W. Potter of New York to the Interstate Commerce Commission and ex Governor Samuel McCall of Massachusetts to the Tariff Commission. The Roswell Rotary Club met for its usual Thursday luncheon at the Chamber of Commerce with guests J. M. Hillman and Harry Andrew. F L Austin spoke on lumber substitutes and a paper discussion by Will Robinson.
