Penasco Fire Near Mayhill Gains Containment Hope
The Penasco Fire in the Sacramento Mountains near Mayhill grew to about 15 400 acres and destroyed 20 structures since Tuesday. By Saturday containment reached 50 percent as favorable weekend weather aided crews including 980 firefighters from 12 states. Investigators probe accidental start possibly from a cigarette or ATV spark linked to William Myers, who died Wednesday. A 15 mile stretch of U S 130 remained closed with evacuees checked out and the Cloudcroft Red Cross shelter emptied.
