Landowners sue to reclaim White Sands leased lands

Southern New Mexico ranchers on White Sands Missile Range move to restore lands leased to the federal government. Contracts provide the government must surrender land to owners when the 20 year leases expire next June 30.

Blackmun Passes Test for Supreme Court Nomination

The Senate Judiciary Committee approved Judge Harry A Blackmun by a 17 to 4 vote as President Nixon's nominee for the Supreme Court. The committee report found him thorough and qualified with no impropriety in stock interests. Some senators preferred Judge Haynsworth or Judge Carswell but supported Blackmun's nomination. Action in the full Senate may come after a delay for additional views.

Kent State sniper claim disputed after campus killings

Ohio Highway Patrol officials contradicted National Guard reports of a sniper sighting by police helicopter before guardsmen killed four Kent State University students during an antiwar protest. The university was evacuated and guarded as a fire destroyed a barn on campus. The dead were Allison Krause, Sandy Scheuer, Jeffrey Miller, and William Schroeder.
