Plan may rescue trains in New Mexico and Arizona
Senate Commerce Committee debate over Amtrak funding and state flexibility offers a glimmer for train service. Reagan admin cites 613 million corridor cost with 150 million leftover for other routes. Senator Schmitt of New Mexico supports flexible state funding and potential 2 percent initial tab, plus possible 75 million in labor savings to boost operating funds. Local service includes New Mexico Limited and Arizona Sunset Limited, with disputes over cost shares and who funds which routes.
