Bustamante was found guilty in district court of embezzling $885.40 in 1954 county funds during his tenure as Las Animas County clerk. Bats Sent From Las Cruces Roswell Not Rabid
Two bats that bit New Mexico boys were not rabid according to Daniel Johnson head of the Albuquerque State Health Department laboratory. Microscopy showed no rabies, though a further virus isolation test would take about ten days. Boys bitten include one near Roswell and another at the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell. five bats were found under a Las Cruces bridge.

Lovington Scout Receives Merit Honor for Life Saving Act
Wesley Williams of Lovington was awarded a council merit recognition by Conquistador Council Boy Scouts for saving a woman’s life after an early morning road accident in southern Colorado. John Campbell presented the certificate as scouts and families from southeastern New Mexico watched. The youth applied pressure to a chest wound and fashioned a tourniquet, actions credited with sustaining the victim until hospital care.
