Weevils Hit Chaves County Alfalfa Fields Hard

Chaves County farmers face an intensified weevil outbreak across about 40 000 acres of alfalfa due to a mild winter and cool spring. Duffy notes field damage, predicts first cut yields may drop from last year’s 2 1/2 tons per acre to around 1500 pounds, with numbers expected to fall as heat returns. Farmers use chemicals like Lorshan and Farndan to curb the pests while a return to normal harvests is anticipated after the initial setback.

State outlines new health insurance plan for uninsured adults

The New Mexico Human Services Department proposes an employer based health plan funded by 278 million in Medicaid funds over five years to cover up to 40 000 adults earning up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level. Employers would pay 75 dollars monthly for qualified workers while employees pay 20 or 35 dollars depending on income. some at or below the poverty line would pay nothing. Critics warn premiums and co pays may limit access while advocates seek to keep funds from being diverted from child health programs. The plan targets February 2003 implementation pending federal waivers and legislative review.
