Reports from Hanoi indicate Vietminh shock troops launched six waves against Dien Bien Phu, but French Union forces and Allied units repelled each assault. The defense, bolstered by napalm and air strikes, held positions as mid April follow ups were planned.

15 year old Bobby Doyal testifies in his second Lovington murder trial defending himself against charges in the fatal shootings of his stepmother Elsie Reiner Doyal and foster sister Beverly Doyal. Jury timing follows closing arguments and instructions after a Monday start. In the first trial he pleaded guilty and received 25 30 years.
Paris reports the Soviet Union proposed to the Western Allies that the United States be made a party to a European security system offered at Berlin and that the USSR join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. In Indochina, French High Command says Vietminh losses totaled 1,350 killed at Dien Bien Phu as the fortified plain remains in French Union hands.
KC-97 Stratofreighters taxied to Walker Air Force Base to replace KB 29s in the 509th refueling squadron. A Walker crew ferried the 74 ton planes from Seattle, with more KC 97s on the way. The KC-97G combines cargo and refueling roles and is entering U S Army Air Forces service with SAC.
Prime Minister Churchill announced in the House of Commons that a full debate on hydrogen bomb problems will begin next Monday. The 79 year old leader said he will speak on Britain’s position and policy, noting American experiments in the Pacific are essential to defense.

Four men died in an early morning blast at the Santa Rita copper pit of Kennecott Copper Corp. at Silver City. A fifth worker, Magdaleno Chavez, was critically injured and taken to the company hospital in Santa Rita. The dead were Chesley Chappell Joe Petrillo Andres Gonzales and Enrique Pedraga.
Funeral services scheduled at 2 pm. tomorrow at the Methodist Church in Ruidoso for Ike N Wingfield 66 pioneer Lincoln county resident former three time mayor and first postmaster of Ruidoso who died Sunday in Phoenix. He was born in Ruidoso Oct 29 1887 and served as Forest Service fire warden and school board member. Burial at Old Angus cemetery follows services.
Dan Hinton Wilmot Jr. chairs the Board of Trustees of the Eastern New Mexico Medical Center and will introduce newly appointed hospital administrator Harry Payne at a Chi Omega benefit two piano concert in Pearson Auditorium in Roswell on Wednesday April 7. Payne previously served as administrator at Memorial Hospital Houston Jefferson-Davis Hospital Houston City County Hospital McKinney and one other medical facility.
Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Lewis L. Strauss told a White House news conference that a hydrogen bomb large enough to wipe out any city now can be made. He cited March 1 and March 26 tests as successful and said the blast was about twice as powerful as expected. Eisenhower noted possible Soviet talks on peacetime atomic use.
Deputy J C Jones chief deputy will take a leave of absence from tomorrow until after the May 4 primary. He filed his candidacy for sheriff at 9 02 am March 2 and will campaign on his own time and expense. Sheriff Harry Puryear said the plan aligns with department policy.

The actress says she loves him and wore Aly’s diamond engagement ring given some time ago. Aly, 42, described visit as a vacation. he and Tierney plan marriage without religious conflict and expect no Aga Khan opposition. Tierney expects to be called a housewife if married.
Lexington Virginia R A Smith known as Capn Dick retires after 33 years as director of athletics at Washington and Lee University. He will be succeeded by E P Cy Twombly.
