Hobbs students top winners in science fair

Royce Green and Donna Lawson of Hobbs High School won international honors at the 21st Southeastern New Mexico Regional Science and Engineering Fair at New Mexico Military Institute. Green earned in Engineering for a solar hot water system, while Lawson won Medical for Children’s Chronological Age in Relation to Skeletal Sizes. They advance to the 1980 International Science and Engineering Fair in St. Paul Minnesota.

Mudslide Traps Diners at Natchez Riverfront Club

Heavy rains caused a mudslide at the Natchez Under the Hill Club beneath a bluff by the Mississippi River trapping an unknown number of people inside the restaurant and lounge. United Press International reports the incident occurred mid afternoon.

Hall unveils plans for re election bid

Chaves County Treasurer L M Hall announces a bid for re election subject to the Republican primary on June 3. Appointed in 1979 to replace the late Gail Harris Hall previously served as Roswell Police Chief from 1964 to 1978 and has 35 years in public service. He cites investment revenues reaching an all time high and aims to continue efficient courteous service to taxpayers. Hall, 55, and wife Juanita reside at 1905 S Richardson Ave with three grown children and three grandchildren.

County road crew faces threats over caliche case

Several Road Department workers were allegedly threatened with termination for sharing information about the departments operations. County Commissioner Sam Moorhead faces scrutiny after truckloads of caliche were hauled to his ranch, raising questions of possible misdeed in office. District Attorney McCormick and County Manager Bud Nunn called for investigations, while Moorhead denied official involvement in the gag order and said he may not issue a statement.
