Johnson seeks half billion a year to aid lagging regions

President Johnson requests $500 million annually in grants and loans to boost economies in lagging U S regions housing about 27 million people. House committees unlikely to act before Easter while leaders aim to pass a sweeping school bill authorizing $1.06 billion in grants for elementary and secondary education for low income children including both public and parochial pupils.

Johnson honors Gemini space heroes with medals

President Johnson praised the Gemini flight as proving the vital role of humans in space and rejected stunt driven programs. Virgil Grissom and John Young received the Exceptional Service Medal. Grissom also earned a Distinguished Service Medal cluster for 1961. Dr. Robert Seamans and Harris Schurmeier were also cited.

Mrs Urton of Roswell dies at 88

Mrs Mamie Spencer Urton 88 longtime Roswell resident died at home 804 N Pennsylvania Ave July evening. Born Otterville Missouri December 2 1876 she taught at Roswell High School 1903 1905 and married William Cooley Urton in 1915. Funeral 10 am Saturday Ballard Chapel burial South Park Cemetery. Pallbearers include Bob Bear Roy Oldrup and Urton family members.

FBI Holds Klansmen in Slaying

Four Birmingham area Ku Klux Klansmen were arrested by FBI agents in Birmingham on conspiracy charges in the ambush slaying of Detroit white woman Viola Gregg Liuzzo near Lownesboro after a civil rights march. President Johnson announced the arrests in Washington shortly after the killing.

Oil Pioneer R. Ricker Dies at 75 in Texas

Rupert P. Ricker, 75, famed for opening the Permian Basin to oil wealth and draining 500000 acres for a university well, died in Big Spring Texas. He funded Texan Oil Co No 1 Santa Rita which sparked a 1923 boom near Reagan County. Survivors include his widow Mary Ricker. Services set for Monday.

Bids Sought On Roswell U S Courthouse Plan

The General Services Administration in Denver issued bids for Roswell New Mexico US Courthouse and Federal Building with bids due May 5. Architect Hugh Rowland said property settlements at the Roswell site remain unclear and construction could start within two weeks after bids open. The four story building covers about 65 000 square feet and is estimated at 1.3 million dollars, located between Fifth and Sixth streets on Richardson.

Former Judge Walker pleads guilty on 1960 tax fail

Allan D. Walker of Alamogordo admitted in U S District Court to failing to file a 1960 federal income tax return. Sentencing is set for April 9. Walker reported a 1960 gross income of 9395.61, half his community property. Vincent M. Lee, a 53 year old rancher and former state senator, died en route to hospital from a heart attack near Alamogordo. Funeral services are pending.

Sixth Annual Southeast New Mexico Science Fair Sponsored Prizes

The event at Cahoon Armory on the New Mexico Military Institute Campus will award 30 senior and 20 junior division winners who advance to the State Science Fair in Socorro April 9–10. Prizes include scholarships from NMMI and Eastern New Mexico University, a five day cruise, books, and U S government savings bonds.

Moonlighting study finds many Americans hold multiple jobs

A Labor Department report based on a 1964 survey shows 3.7 million Americans hold more than one job, a figure down about 200000 from 1963. The study argues two jobs do not meaningfully affect unemployment and would not rise if the 40 hour work week was trimmed to 35 hours.

Gary W. Hamill a 29 year old Roswell drive in restaurant operator pleaded guilty in U S District Court to dispensing narcotics without paying a special government tax He faces sentencing April 9 and a trial April 19 on unlawful sale of narcotics Indictment may be dismissed after sentencing for the lesser charge.

Accident Kills Duke City Boy

A 7 year old Albuquerque boy Bob Barajas was struck and killed by a pickup while crossing a street. The driver Kirt Darner, 26, was cited for lacking a brake and light inspection sticker. An investigation continued. Police sought to identify an Indian killed when struck by a passenger train in downtown Gallup Thursday night.

NMMI Budget Revision Approved by State Board

Santa Fe AP The State Board of Educational Finance approved a budget revision for New Mexico Military Institute increasing athletics, administration and general expenses. NMMI reported 107335 in endowed income, requesting 11500 for athletics and 10335 for admin and general costs this fiscal year.

Gambling Draws Fine in Albuquerque Federal Court

Albuquerque federal judge H Vearle Payne fined Charles A Willis 52 of 409 W 17th 1000 dollars for accepting wagers bookmaking without a federal stamp and IRS registration. Half of the fine suspended 500 remains due in 30 days. Willis was arrested January 2 with Robert McGuire 28 of 904 Avenida Del Sombre. McGuire has not yet entered a plea.
