Roswell City Council adopts a new dog and cat ordinance effective Monday officials say it tightens rules on pets running at large. The measure adds cat coverage, imposes fines up to 300 dollars, and calls for spaying, immunization, and licensing before shelter release.
Ken Maynard, white-hatted star of 300 shoot em up westerns and last survivor of the Four Horsemen, died Friday at age 77. He began his film career in 1914 with the Kit Carson Show and helped tame the wild west for cinema alongside Hoot Gibson Buck Jones and Tom Mix.
Susan Snead of Roswell takes second in the 14th Annual Southeastern New Mexico Regional Science and Engineering Fair at NMMI Cahoon Armory. Wynn of Santa Fe wins with True 3D Photographs Holograms. both earn trips to the International Science and Engineering Fair and scholarships.
Wynn students dominate the senior division with multiple winners across Botany Medicine Math Zoology Microbiology Earth and Space Science Physics Engineering and more. Winners include Lisa Finkner Clovis Michael Fritz Artesia Pardner Wynn Roswell and Patsy Deen Floyd among others with several honorable mentions and a state fair appearance scheduled for April 14 in Socorro.
Saigon announced it would release the last group of American prisoners Tuesday and Wednesday, but said demands to release Laos captives exceed the cease-fire. In New Mexico an 18-year-old Loving resident, Vincente George Urquidez, died in a single car crash on State Road 318 south of Roswell. In Taos, an Albuquerque youth, Andy Frank, 17, died in a snowslide at Taos Ski Valley.
In Colfax County New Mexico five Raton school children stranded on a snow packed dirt road for more than 24 hours were located alive at their rural homes southeast of Raton. Three men who sought the bus reportedly took the children to their homes in a four wheel drive vehicle as rescuers and the driver worked through eight foot drifts with bulldozers and National Guardsmen. The driver Felix Martinez had radioed that the bus slid off a ditch and was stranded.
A Consumer Survey in Roswell shows residents want a coliseum or coliseum auditorium, improved vocational facilities, more doctors and clinics, lower prices and higher wages, plus expanded animal shelter services. Most support upgrading vocational education and a bond issue for a new facility.
