A nervy night manager at the Brown Palace Hotel in downtown Denver faced an armed robber last night. When the gunman demanded cash, F. S. Ringelheimer, 60, opened a drawer he knew was empty. The assailant fled after a tense stare-down.
Lt. Gov. Joseph M. Montoya Democrat heads a fast campaign swing through the Pecos Valley with a Roswell stop today as Tom Bolack Republican made earlier visits. The special election to fill the late Antonio M. Fernandez's seat is set for April 5 with fundraisers, coffee receptions and a TV program schedule across Roswell Clovis Portales Artesia Hobbs Lovington Carlsbad Tucumcari and Albuquerque through Friday.
President Eisenhower and Prime Minister Macmillan announced a near final agreement to store U S atomic warheads in Britain under U S control for quick fitting to missiles in emergencies. The talks at Bermuda also yielded a broad set of allied security and nuclear testing provisions with the Baghdad Pact involved.
Ice and gale conditions froze the local law front in Texas Panhandle as front moves toward Fort Worth. Sheriff and state police receive numerous inquiries while a U S marshal, with two youths en route to El Reno, Oklahoma, returns to Roswell and places the youths in Chaves county jail.
Artesia's Alton Posey, a fireman off duty, used a predator call near Community of Hope NM to lure a Wiley fox. The fox approached within gun range, the fight ended with Posey sustaining a hand injury as the fox escaped, leaving the hunter humbled.
A Roswell service station was held up last night with $58.73 taken after a gun was shown to attendant Tommy Flynn. A separate home burglary at 313 East Frazier Street targeted Maj. and Mrs. Sam Assimotos, with items including a movie camera, watches, binoculars, shirts, socks and underwear missing.
Soap Box Derby clinics announced by Derby director Joe Darnell will run Tuesday through Friday evenings at the Optimist Park clubhouse. Sessions cover racer-building details and entry rules, with Roswell and Carlsbad participants listed and five Carlsbad entrants noted. The 1960 winner will appear with his racer on KSWS-TV Friday at 4 p.m.
Weekend blizzard paralyzed a 500 mile north south span and 300 mile cross area, hitting Nebraska Kansas Colorado Oklahoma Texas Panhandles and northeast New Mexico. At least four deaths reported. Oakley Kansas saw 14 inches of snow and 20 foot drifts near Cheyenne Wells Colorado. Winds up to 80 mph east Colorado and 74 mph west Kansas. About 7,500 motorists and travelers stranded, shelters used as transportation and communications collapse. Moisture ends drought in some areas while high winds blew snow off others.
Sam Perry reports his unlicensed dog died after convulsions at 6:30 p.m. The mongrel pup, found near 1816 N. Washington Ave, showed signs of strychnine poisoning before its death, suggesting foul play.
Nat Johnson special agent in charge of the Albuquerque FBI will address the First Christian Church men's fellowship tonight at 7 p.m. Al Sample, vice president of the group, announced the speaker.
Seattle police investigate a threatening phone call to the wife of a witness who testified before the Senate Rackets Investigating Committee. Howard Sylvester names a Uniformed Systems employee from the Teamsters Union as the caller. Union officials had no comment. Mrs Sylvester reported the incident to authorities.
Mrs. Sylvester received an anonymous call on Thursday night threatening her husband Howard Sylvester who testified before a Senate committee led by Sen McClellan about Teamsters’ spending in the Washington state right to work campaign. Sylvester said the caller vowed payback and warned of attackers.
A U.N. salvage team raised the sunken tug Edgar Bonnet clearing the last obstacle for 10,000-ton ships to pass through the Suez Canal. Egypt expected to open the waterway soon while the Abukir frigate remains a minor blockage at the southern entrance. Dag Hammarskjold's Cairo mission nears end amid reported Egyptian concessions and ongoing UNEF considerations.
Senate Rackets Investigating Committee presses Teamsters President Dave Beck for explanation of a $270,000 transfer. McClellan notes no evidence of loan or gift and plans to question Beck as he arrives for today's hearing. Beck claims repayment and vows to present records amid scrutiny and criticism from AFL CIO leaders.
