Roswell leaders weigh a library bond with Mayor Jerry N Smith saying it would likely lead any bond agenda this year. A Daily Record poll found 57 of 75 residents favor a new library and 47 would support a bond, while 70 deem it a higher priority than storm sewer projects.
The 61 year old East College Avenue resident and Fowler Van Lines owner announces a Democratic bid for Chaves County Commissioner District 1 in the June 1 primary. Fowler cites community welfare and County service goals. He attended Riverside Military Academy and Roswell High School, and holds numerous local leadership roles.
Mitsuyasu Maeno, 29, a Japanese film actor and publicity pilot, crashes a single engine plane into Yoshio Kodama's Tokyo residence while filming for a movie. Kodama, tied to the Lockheed payoff scandal, survives. fire spreads but no injuries to Kodama or 11 others. Police say Maeno appeared to crash intentionally though motive unclear.
Secretary of State Kissinger urged a steady U S Soviet balance amid election year unease over detente and defense policy while noting critics echo earlier missile gap fears. The piece also cites a Lockheed payoffs case involving the sale of 14 C130 Hercules aircraft in 1970 and related charges against Fanali Lefebvre and associates in Rome.
Wayne Rogers a 16 year old Rio Hondo DeMolay member and 29 other students participate in DeMolay in Government Day in Roswell. Rogers serves as Mayor for the day while other boys fill city offices and meet with Mayor Jerry N. Smith and City Council members to learn how the city operates and its $15 million budget and 300 employees.
