Gun bill to expand federal background checks in Senate
Senate debate will include expanding background checks to most private gun transactions amid pressure from President Obama and gun control advocates. The plan, backed by Majority Leader Reid, aims to curb gun violence after the Newtown school massacre and may include penalties for illegal trafficking and boosts to school security grants. Opposition from the NRA centers on privacy and government records, with votes possible on amendments such as an assault weapons ban and high capacity magazines.
