Casey's Shadow offers quiet horse drama with strong performances
The 1978 film follows Casey and his fast two year old quarter horse as they chase the All American Futurity. Lloyd Bourdelle trains on a Louisiana farm while Casey's brother Buddy helps, creating a warm family dynamic. The cast includes Walter Matthau and Andrew Rubin with steadiness and humor. The screenplay by Carol Sobieski, from John McPhee, balances clichés and realism, even as a foaling sequence raises questions for younger viewers.
