Eisenhower Memorial Design Sparks Washington Debate
The Eisenhower family urged a new design for the national memorial on the National Mall near the Air and Space Museum. A House hearing scrutinized the 14-year project with Frank Gehry’s avant garde concept facing criticism for cost and style. About $60 million has been spent of a $142 million budget, and lawmakers may halt funding as a competition is proposed. The family calls the tapestries and 80 foot columns too extravagant and seeks redesign.
