New Mexico Lags on Unemployment Benefits Despite Solvent Fund

The Economic Policy Institute and partners rate New Mexico failing in eligibility and preparedness for unemployment benefits while praising the fund’s solvency. About 23 percent of unemployed qualify for benefits, far below the national 43.3 percent. The fund holds about $600 million, with $34 million more from federal extended benefits. Rep. Mimi Stewart calls for reform to modernize eligibility for seasonal, part time, and women workers.
