In Beirut a hijacking on Middle East Airlines 313 ended with passengers unaware until landing. In San Salvador police say 11 students were shot to death as political violence persists.
Two unemployed teens Thomas Watson and Albert Green end a 100 day endurance contest roped to a Chevrolet truck in Yorktown Heights and Peekskill. Curry Chevrolet promoted the event drawing about 100 spectators and a Guinness Book of Records logo signoff.
Roswell hosts 665 high school students from across New Mexico for the 13th annual Office Education Association conference. Contests test office skills including accounting, public speaking, and job interviews with awards to be announced Tuesday and winners advancing to the national meet in Minneapolis. Elizabeth Cordova and Lissa Garcia vie for OEA president. both plan college after graduation.
Five councilmen did not seek re election in Roswell. Boehms Licon and Strand depart from key committees prompting major reshuffling. The council plans bids for 15 HUD funded housing rehabilitations and reviews zoning appeals and landfill and light industrial requests. The Roswell County Commission also meets to consider a jail and juvenile facility study.
