An explosion at Scotia Coal Co. No. 1 Black Mountain mine near Hyden Kentucky killed 15 miners who were laying rails underground. Rescue teams recovered thirteen bodies by midnight and two more at 1:20 a.m. Authorities probe methane gas causes amid safety questions.

ENMU officials report about 600 people from Chaves and Eddy counties attended a campus day event. Regent William F. Brainerd spoke in place of Dr. Warren Armstrong and outlined plans to remodel the gym with state funds amounting to 903000.
