Morrow, a Roswell community figure and mother of two, has spent fewer hours organizing the Walk for Hope in recent years. The fundraiser has raised an estimated $118,000 for the Chaves County Cancer Fund to aid locals diagnosed with cancer, while she supports family and community through the effort.
A $5.9 billion New Mexico budget advances to the Senate with a 4.4 percent spending rise for next year. It funds 1 percent raises for state workers and educators, and 4 percent for state police. The plan drops a House merit pay program, instead offering $2 million for teacher stipends in high poverty, low performance schools. Governor Martinez sought $11 million for merit incentives, while some House Democrats opposed funding merit pay.
