The Roswell Astronomical Society and Photography Class invite the public to view an indirect partial solar eclipse Saturday morning behind Mark Howell School. First contact near 9 40 a.m. Last contact before noon. About 50 percent obscured at maximum. Telescopes and pinhole devices will be used if skies clear.
A Saigon cabinet minister accused the U S embassy of public support for Tran Ngoc Chau’s claim of CIA involvement, arguing it could have kept Chau from prosecution. The disclosure came at a news conference amid the Chau case fallout.
President Nixon outlined a 3,000 word defense of US Laos policy and announced seeking help from the Soviet Union and Britain. He said no American ground combat troops are in Laos and no U.S. personnel have been killed in Laos by ground action. He noted 1,040 Americans are in Laos with 616 employed by the government and reported North Vietnamese troops and supplies moving through Laos to South Vietnam. Air operations focus on interdicting the Ho Chi Minh Trail with reconnaissance and combat support flights conducted at Laos’ request. The president claimed U.S. air activity increased only as North Vietnamese aggression rose.
Roswell oilman Rep. Steve Helbing announced he is a candidate for governor. A campaign kickoff dinner honoring him will be held Saturday, March 14, replacing the previously planned date. The event signals his run ahead of the Republican primary.
Lyndon B. Johnson remained in Brooke General Hospital under Army doctors who praised a very good night with no severe pain in 24 hours. They noted rare premature contractions and a stable general condition with no cause for concern, planning limited activity and light walking as rest allows.

U S Senator Joseph Montoya and Representative Ed Foreman clashed over the impact of Pentagon reductions on New Mexico. Foreman, a Republican tied to Holloman AFB and Cannon AFB, cited 1 407 jobs lost but forecast 2 373 new personnel by mid 1971 with three F111 squadrons fully manned. Montoya, a Democrat, warned the cuts would devastate the state economy and cited other federal funding shortfalls.
Patsy Tijerina 22, wife of Alianza founder Reies Lopez Tijerina, received five years probation from U S District Court Judge H Vearle Payne after a Feb 18 conviction for destruction of government property tied to the June 8 1969 Gallina Forest Service sign burning. A mistrial occurred on a second charge over a Coyote sign burning.
Senator William Proxmire warns that urgent payments up to 641.2 million to Lockheed could trigger a collapse of the defense industry. He faults Pentagon policy and argues Congress must decide on the aid, saying the defense program risks concentration in a few firms and long term security damage.
