Blackdom NM one of state’s first Black settlements

UNM historian Carlyn Pinkins studies Black homesteads in New Mexico, including Blackdom, founded in 1903 by Frank Boyer and 12 others who fled Deep South oppression. The community near Roswell housed about 150 people before dispersing in the 1920s.

Artesia shooting prompts state police investigation

The New Mexico State Police probe into an Artesia officer involved shooting centers on Clifton Stevenson, 43, who was shot by two Artesia Police officers at 9 02 p m near West Centre Avenue and 18th Street. He was treated and released. both officers are on administrative leave during the inquiry.

Homeless encampment near Walmart in Espanola cleared

Officials from Ohkay Owingeh moved in on February 20 with heavy equipment to clear a homeless encampment by Walmart. Residents were given 15 minutes to pack up, then tents were relocated to Fairview Lane under city guidance while tribal officials kept some on their side of the property. City and county case managers continue to monitor relocations and safety.
