Officials look to relieve jail overcrowding in Chaves County
Chaves County Detention Center holds 237 but has run over 300 inmates for a month. Administrator Clay Corn cites double banks yet notes it should house about 270. County Manager Stan Riggs says rising numbers strain enforcement and that inmates are sent to other counties for the first time since 1996. Female inmate numbers have grown to 80 from 60, prompting outreach to judges on alternatives such as electronic monitoring and work release for lesser offenses.

Feds designate 1200 square miles of border land as jaguar habitat
Federal officials set aside nearly 1200 square miles along the U S Mexico border as critical habitat for jaguars. The designation comes amid long standing disputes with Arizona and New Mexico wildlife agencies and environmental groups. While no breeding females have been documented in the U S in over five decades, the area is deemed essential for dispersal and recovery of the species in the region.
