Mescalero Apache descendant Geronimo interrupted a Friday event at St. Joseph's Church claiming proof of a $300,000 payoff to tribal leaders to build a Monitored Retrievable Storage facility on the reservation. He waved an unloaded handgun, warned of land desecration, and said he would seek tribal court injunctions while urging Chino and Peso to resign. The tribe prepares for a second vote on the MRS project after a January 31 defeat and a petition drive that gathered 700 signatures.
Santa Fe New Mexico state Senate eyes a broad surge of gambling measures. Senator John Arthur Smith says the Senate Select Gaming Committee will approve both ban and open gaming proposals and send them to Governor Gary Johnson. A lottery bill to create a state lottery run by a state board was approved, with proceeds funding a scholarship fund.
In Davis California twelve residents urge repaving a one block alley citing hazards and mosquito breeding. Councilwoman Julie Partansky uses the California Environmental Quality Act to argue the alley is a historical resource and should not be paved. The council votes to survey landowners and staff recommends spending 43500 dollars to pave the alley.
In Roswell and nearby New Mexico cities graffiti appears on walls, fences, and rails costing repairs and creating fear. Officials say many incidents exceed 1,000 dollars in damage and repainting a long wall can reach 500 dollars, while some graffiti is linked to gangs. See Graffiti, Page 8.
