Destroyer Jacob Jones Sunk Off New Jersey Coast

The navy reports the destroyer Jacob Jones was sunk by an enemy submarine off Cape May New Jersey before dawn on February 28. Only 11 crew members survived including two apprentice seamen. more than 100 died, with the commanding officer Lt Commander A Black among the missing. Two torpedoes hit the ship causing the bow explosion and depth charge detonation after the stern hit. The incident marks the ninth U S naval loss in the war up to that point.
