Federal grazing fee stays at minimum for seventh year
The federal grazing fee remains at 1.35 per animal unit month for about 26 000 permits across Western states, renewing a long standing clash between ranchers and conservationists over subsidies and costs. BLM and Forest Service defend the rate as part of the 1978 formula, while critics argue it underfunds government grazing costs and shifts expenses to taxpayers. Barrick Gold Corp and Newmont Mining Corp are among Nevada permit holders, with thousands of acres and AUMs affected.
