Caring for the umbilical cord stump after birth
The umbilical cord stump usually falls off within about two weeks. Keep the area clean and dry, give sponge baths, and avoid fully wetting the stump. Do not cover it with a diaper and fold the diaper away from the stump to prevent irritation. If urine or stool contact occurs, clean gently with mild soap and water then dry. If advised by a doctor, clean around the cord with a cotton swab or gauze and rubbing alcohol. Do not pull or twist the stump as it heals.
