Roswell faces delays on three proposed major shopping centers due to tight money. Landowners cite funding troubles for one project in West Second Street and say two other centers, at South Main Street Brasher Road and near the New Mexico Military Institute Golf Course, are pushed back with openings targeted in 1981 to 1983.
Special prosecutor Arthur Christy has convened a grand jury and subpoenaed ABC News for materials tied to the Studio 54 incident involving White House aide Hamilton Jordan. No charges have been filed. witnesses may be recalled as the inquiry expands to Kraft and Dobelle in an election year context.
The Pecos Valley Artesian Conservancy District seeks hearings to identify which water rights harm Carlsbad Irrigation District operations. If approved, a water master could restrict up to 20 000 acres of irrigated land in the Roswell area.
In Philadelphia Mayor William Green implements mass layoffs of about 1000 police officers and firefighters. The action ends a long era of no such layoffs and occurs with a tentative firefighters contract in place and no strike.
Reykjavik Iceland via United Press International travelers may bring beer into Iceland now though state stores will not sell it. Finance Minister Sighvatur Bjorgvinsson announced that 12 bottles of beer may substitute for the previously allowed 1 liter wine and add to the duty free allowance. Previously only airline personnel and seamen could bring beer. Wine and hard liquor remain available in stores at about 27 dollars per vodka bottle and six dollars per bottle of red wine.
Michael F. McCormick announced his bid for re election as district attorney for the Fifth Judicial District covering Chaves Eddy and Lea counties. He is a Carlsbad native and UNM graduate with a background as assistant DA city attorney and college instructor in government and criminal justice.
