TIA to lay off Roswell workers amid strike

District Attorney Report Details Six Month Case Load
The Fifth Judicial District's six month report covers Chaves Lea and Eddy counties. Of 729 defendants screened 51 or 6.9 percent went to trial with 31 convicted on original charges and two on lesser charges. Seventeen acquittals and two mistrials followed. 122 pled guilty before trial with 71 on original charges and 51 after plea bargaining. 112 charges were dismissed for insufficient evidence plea negotiations or other factors. 73 percent of those screened were later charged. Most actions arose from preliminary hearings. 470 defendants faced 643 crimes. 65 defendants faced grand juries. no grand jury in Chaves County. 147 juveniles in 214 incidents, 20 percent of caseload. Nine percent directed to Magistrate Court for other actions. 25 insanity petitions 21 probation revocations. 79 support actions. six paternity actions two vehicle forfeitures 10 extraditions. Cases pending not included.

West Berlin mayoral candidate faces kidnap death threat
Major opposition candidate Peter Lorenz of the Christian Democrats is under a death threat from kidnappers who demand six anarchists be freed from jail.
