New Mexico Caves Charted By BLM Expert Don Sawyer
Don Sawyer of the Bureau of Land Management leads the first complete inventory of New Mexico caves on public land and notes many on private property. He envisions gating the most scenic caves to balance conservation with public use while warning that development will be limited by technical and budget constraints. The Ft Stanton Cave figures in near-term plans with improved facilities and an underground hiking route for permit holders.
