A dummy moonship conducted a dawn test at White Sands Missile Range, showing a successful safety system for astronauts. NASA reported only a minor hitch as a tailwind kept the safety rocket aloft 105 seconds instead of 90.
Roswell Board of Education heard final interviews from D Sart and Mitcham Voll and Nolan and Rowland and Associates for the college design planned on a 220 acre site at Brown Road and College. Max Flatow advised a 20 year master plan is unnecessary. Rowland offered free land-use study. firms expect preliminary work payment before bond. The bond legality dispute was noted with Denver attorneys suggesting a friendly court case to the New Mexico Supreme Court.
The Roswell City School Board on Monday advised the State Board of Education to consolidate four county districts Berrendo L F D East Grand Plains and Mountain View with Roswell. State board inquiries on representation and county patron benefits were addressed as material is prepared for Santa Fe. County superintendent Cookson voiced no comment until the county board meets.

The New Mexico Commission on Alcoholism on Monday night refused to rehire Ruby Keller, former cook at Pecos Valley Lodge, a Roswell special hospital for alcoholics. Keller was dismissed March 22 for insubordination despite a state personnel board ruling in favor of reinstatement. The commission will not place her in its area of operations, though she is deemed eligible for another state position.
At La Mesa Park in the Raton Quarter Horse Derby trials Miss Top Flame, an odds-on favorite, won the 400-yard fifth race by a three-quarter length. She previously set a 350 yard world record for fillies and mares and clocked 20.40 seconds in the trial, paying $2.60, $2.20 and $2.20.

Andy Abeita and allies including Police Chief Pablo Abeita after the expulsion of Rt. Rev. Msgr. Stadtmueller. Stadtmueller was handcuffed and removed from the reservation amid controversy. Archdiocese officials consider potential legal action.
The Sanity trial of Joan G. Brown, 29, a former school teacher, opens in district court over the murder of James Pearson, 20, a University of Colorado student. The sole issue is Brown's mental condition at the time of the March shooting near Boulder. Pearson’s body with two bullet wounds was found in a mountain canyon. Charles R. Self, 18, of Aurora, another former student, is also charged with murder and will be tried in November.
