Roswell hosts a big Saturday night with blackout events a street dance and a cadet recruiting drive. Unclear if Army bombers will appear but the governor is due in the afternoon as organizers finalize celebration plans.
Local residents donate to the Fourth of July fireworks fund at Bottomless Lakes State Park, organized by the 20 30 Club. Five gifts range from $5. large participation hoped to fund an elaborate lakeside show. Events include swimming, a beauty contest, and boat races. park lighting arrangements align with a community blackout plan.
Dixie Owens, 30, former Tucumcari bar and dancehall operator, died from a gunshot wound after a resort east of Silver City. Amos LaFon, resort manager, surrendered and turned over a .30 caliber rifle. LaFon says he fired in self defense during a fight between Owens and Art Mitchell. Assistant district attorney J R Wrinkle quoted LaFon.

The New Mexico Supreme Court reviews a Union County district ruling that paying liens delinquent after four years cannot be foreclosed. Ten city attorneys plus Altman’s counsel argue liens are perpetual and precede limits on statutes, filing the rehearing motion in Santa Fe.
Roswell city attorney Ross L. Malone Jr returned from Santa Fe where the motion for re hearing was filed. Briefs were drafted by Malone and fellow city attorneys from Albuquerque Santa Fe and Carlsbad. The case impacts many municipalities with liens barred by a supreme court ruling. Roswell faces 176000 dollars in paying bonds secured by affected liens.
Joe DiMaggio homered and extended his hitting streak but the Yankees lost 7 to 6 to the Philadelphia Athletics. If Crosby retains the crown a rematch will be staged within a year at Roswell with a challenger chosen by the Lions Club. The match begins at two oclock with Edd Amonett as general manager and seating described as ample in advance.
Dallas reports the death of 86 year old Andrew Jackson Houston, son of a Texas hero, in a Baltimore hospital just before a special senatorial election. He served 24 days of his interim appointment after Morris Sheppard’s death, amid a crowded field of candidates led by Gov. W. Lee O’Daniel. The event is not expected to alter the campaign wind up.

The Roswell New Mexico Employment Service office will relocate July 1 to the basement of City Hall. The current address is 120 East 3rd Street, announced manager Clifton Holloman.
The flood control committee of the Chamber of Commerce will present a report to directors at their meeting next Tuesday night. It covers a study by the committee on the Pecos River Joint Investigation under the National Resources Planning Board.
One hundred ten delegates registered for the 14th annual New Mexico DeMolay Conclave at the Masonic Temple Roswell with attendees from Albuquerque Clovis Gallup Las Cruces Las Vegas Portales Santa Fe and Roswell Election of state officers and site for 1942 conclave planned. Mayor Thomas J Hall welcomed delegates with state Master Counselor Morgan Nelson of Artesia and Lloyd B Johnson of Albuquerque spoke on leadership. John W Hall addressed the banquet on The Penalty of Leadership.

Street lights off at 9 35 with lights on at 9 40. Fire sirens at 9 30 and 9 32 signal turnout, with a brief siren during most of the blackout.
The Chamber of Commerce hosts Governor John E. Miles at a 6:30 p.m. dinner Saturday at Nickson Coffee Shop. A brief program is planned with remarks by the governor, and tickets remain a few hours before the event for local citizens to meet him.
R. E. Sieg of Seventh Street Laundry placed a two line ad in Too Late To Classify seeking a boy to carry bundles. By morning he had the ad removed after about thirty boys showed up. He noted the night crowd kept coming, reflecting how today’s small boy is up to date and reads classified notices.
