Lee lands bill would force sale of federal lands in West
The proposal would require BLM and U S Forest Service to sell 0 5 to 0 75 percent of holdings in western states except Montana to private contractors and local governments for housing and infrastructure The plan would sell land mainly near population centers while preserving national parks monuments and wilderness areas Critics warn the move would harm outdoor recreation and Western economies while supporters say it would unlock housing The bill faces opposition from Deb Haaland who cites New Mexico outdoor economy and jobs data and questions why Congress would prioritize land sales over public needs The sponsor says changes would remove forest land sales and protect farming ranching and outdoor use
