Five Die When Truck Runs Over Car Near Deming

A westbound car carrying five youths is crushed by an eastbound heavy truck on U S 70, 5.4 miles east of Deming. Driver Jack Harden 21 and four passengers Eleanor Hixon 19, Helen Wilcox 16, Nellie Thomas 18, Wilburn Bryant 18 die at the scene. truck driver A B Hicks uninjured. State toll rises to 174 for the year.

Parts of NM May Become Disaster Area

The White House said President Eisenhower will declare drought disaster areas within 24 hours in parts of Texas Oklahoma Kansas Colorado and New Mexico to aid farmers and ranchers. Agriculture Secretary Benson asked for emergency powers and Atty. Gen. Brownell will review relief laws for possible use.

Polish ship captain seeks asylum in Britain

Captain Jan Cwiklinski of the Polish ship Batory fled his vessel and sought political asylum in Great Britain. He displayed the Gold Cross of Merit awarded in Gydnia for outstanding service in the Polish merchant marine, recalling his command during the Batory incident with Gerhardt Eisler aboard.

Plan to Plug Back Cloudcroft Wildcat Drilling Update

HOBBS Southern Production Co plans to plug back its No 1 Cloudcroft wildcat in Otero County. The well drilled to 4071 feet in dolomite and sand will perforate casing at 1500 feet and test an unidentified formation. It stands 2310 feet from north and 1980 feet from east lines of section 5 17s 12e.

Store Owner Shot in Albuquerque Liquor Store Robbery

Edward C. Johnston was shot during a hold up at his Golden Eagle liquor store in Albuquerque. Police said Johnston, who tended the shop, received a scalp wound after two young bandits ordered him to lie behind the counter and fired as he knelt.

Gas Company Destroyed in Hagerman Blaze Injures Owner

Fire Chief Henry E. Porter reports a $50,000 blaze at the Keeth Gas Company plant in Hagerman as the worst in town history. Jess Keeth, owner, was badly burned while transferring gas. he was taken to St. Marys Hospital for treatment as 25 firefighters fought the two hour fire.

Ex-Police Chief Blakeney Hospitalized After Heart Attack

Lloyd Blakeney 48 former Roswell police chief and Eddy County deputy sheriff was hospitalized in Carlsbad after a heart attack. He was stricken Thursday at home on returning from vacation. His condition was listed as serious and doctors barred visitors.

Youths Begin Three Year Terms For Nara Visa Bank Robbery

Albert Nick Madrid and Esteven Vigil, both 16 or 17, from Clayton, start three year federal terms for the May 21 Nara Visa bank robbery. Joe Mondragon, 22, also involved, remains jailed in Bernalillo County and plans to plead innocent awaiting federal grand jury indictment. The trio allegedly robbed the bank and forced an assistant cashier to surrender $1,011.

Railroads Seek Higher Mail Pay Increase

Railroads filed with the Interstate Commerce Commission calling for at least a 45 percent rise in compensation for hauling U S mail. They cited a 1952 payment of 319 million dollars against costs of 450 million, and argued the ICC should allow more than 45 percent if evidence supports it.

Salvation Army Officers to Move to Albuquerque

Major and Mrs H L Nadeau longtime Salvation Army officers in Roswell are transferred to Albuquerque. Capt and Mrs John Bowden from Ogden Utah will replace them with a welcome meeting on July 5 at 7 45 p m A farewell service for the Nadeaus is planned for June 28 at 7 45 p m at the Salvation Army Hall 408 South Main. Pantheon de la Guerra Restored Revealed in Baltimore

The world’s largest painting Pantheon de la Guerra, 18000 square feet, labored by 128 artists over four years, was unrolled in Baltimore for William Haussner who bought it for 3400 dollars last summer. The scene shows 6000 life size figures from WWI and remained in good condition despite a small hole. Haussner aims to donate the panorama to a veterans organization.
