Linn Quinton of Houston recounts a front stairway blaze. He describes panicking residents jumping to safety after two bystanders urged him to leap and a strong man on the ground catching him. He notes others could not escape as the flames took hold.
An unidentified survivor sits by a mailbox in the French Quarter and talks to reporters after a Sunday blaze that claimed 29 lives, the worst fire tragedy in New Orleans history.
Brezhnev said goodbye to the American people then boarded a giant jet and departed across the Atlantic concluding the Nixon summit. Eloy C Castillo 33 of Albuquerque identified as the June 18 Albuquerque west mesa homicide victim. A big tractor trailer struck a car on Interstate 20 in Monahans killing four and injuring four others. Roswell area forecast calls for mostly fair weather with highs near 93 to 96 and isolated thundershowers.
John W. Dean III tells Senate Watergate hearings he believes Nixon was involved yet unaware of the full implications. He cites Haldeman Ehrlichman role in cover up, says Colson deeper involved, and notes payoff approvals. Dean testified under immunity, admitting obstruction and perjury, and discussed campaign funds used for his honeymoon.
Two vintage aircraft the AT-6 and Grumman Wildcat were shown at the Roswell Industrial Air Center open house for General Aviation Month drawing about 3 500 attendees. Wings of Yesterday plans to move from Sarasota to Roswell for storage and display with weekly flights to keep them in operating trim.
A member of the Albuquerque Jump Club is shown floating to the taxiway at the Air Center during Sunday open house on the flight line. Seven jumps were made by the colorful group in the afternoon and one parachutist reportedly has 600 jumps. Jim Stewart leads the group.
Roswell community leaders hold informal talks this week on Second Street and North Main Street rebuilding as part of the New Mexico State Highway Commissioners monthly meetings in Artesia. Discussions include bids timing for North Main Street set for September and a possible Two year minimum for Second Street bidding.
Roswell police and the Southeastern New Mexico Economic Development District announce a $10,842 grant from the New Mexico Traffic Safety Commission to target peak accident areas on Main and Second Streets. Additional patrols, a revoked license surveillance program, and a three month Missouri traffic school participation are planned to reduce accidents.
U S and Soviet leaders wrap talks with a 3400 word communique seeking stricter strategic arms limits, expanded trade, and peace moves for Cambodia and Southeast Asia. Nixon and Brezhnev envision regular summits and a possible 1974 Moscow visit to advance detente.
