A French government member in Bordeaux appeals to Americans for sympathy and explains France’s peace move as independent. He denounces exiled factions in London and criticizes British policy while defending France’s actions and sadness.
The body of a large man was found jammed beneath a rock in the Rio Grande four miles west of Questa. Identifications were not possible though Wakefield of Denver was suspected as the drowned boater missing since July 4, 1938, while A S Hunt of Alamosa survived the wreck. The unidentified body was recovered by John Anderson with a rescue party awaiting return.
France hears Hitler's peace terms as a 1918 meeting scene is recalled. The drawing shows General von Cundell, General Winterfield, M Erzberger, Count Obendorff, Admiral Weymis, General Foch, Admiral Sims, and General Weygand. Only Weygand remains active in this war.
Roswell recorded 1.23 inches of rain from Sunday into Sunday night with showers spreading to eastern New Mexico. Temperatures ranged from 89 high to 59 low, and the forecast calls for generally fair weather tonight and Tuesday as streets flooded during the downpour.

In the American League schedule, Philadelphia, St. Louis, and New York were set to play at Cleveland in a night game while Boston faced Detroit and Washington met Chicago. The contests were postponed due to rain.

Ted Jones district manager for Griffith Theaters announces Wayne Patterson, Roswell manager of the Yucca and the Pecos, will take vacation then assume Hobbs four-theater management. Patterson returns to Hobbs from which he came to Roswell, a promotion said Jones. The Patterson family is popular in Roswell and will be missed. Roswell successor not yet named.
French and Italian delegates met near Rome to negotiate peace terms after France accepted German terms. Italy aims to conclude an accord quickly as Fascist leaders expect an agreement today. Reports say fighting continues until six hours after German notified of the armistice.
The New Mexico Federation of farm and livestock bureaus will hold its annual convention in Las Vegas New Mexico as directors settled the dates at a semi annual meeting. The gates were not set.
Washington June 24 The recessed congress left the nation a bill of 14 539 970 627 today for operating the federal government including the armament program during the next year. This record expenditure for times of peace was the sum legislators have appropriated so far this session. All regular appropriations for the fiscal year beginning July 1 were disposed of before recess for the Republican convention. The figure includes 5 082 210 080 for defense after Roosevelt urged immediate armament expansion.
State police chief Tom Summers asked the state finance board for 15000 to carry on the agency through June 30. He cited shortfalls in quotas and noted 90000 has been raised in six months for other departments. Sergeant James Strosnider said 15000 is needed after a 14000 saving. The driver's license division, pulling about 190000 yearly, has a budget of 81000 plus 40 percent paid to cities and other contributions. Finance board member Fred Luthy proposed consolidating that division with the police. The board restored cuts for the Hospital for the Insane and the Intertribal Indian Ceremonial Association and considered requests from the Agricultural College, El Rito Normal, and Silver City Teachers College. The boys industrial school was allowed to draw beyond its monthly one twelfth in anticipation of a future deficiency appropriation.

West Texas expects fair weather with scattered thundershowers in the extreme south tonight and cooler conditions Tuesday, except in the Panhandle tonight.
