Control of La Mesa Fire Near Los Alamos Achieved

The La Mesa blaze in Santa Fe National Forest was contained at 6 a.m. after burning about 15 270 acres. Firefighters expect full control by 8 p.m. tonight as 1500 personnel from six states worked 38 miles of line and 210 000 gallons of slurry were used. The fire, one of the forest’s largest, lasted eight days and cost about 993 000 to contain. humidity and cloud cover aided the effort per a Forest Service spokesman.

Photo evidence sparks hunt in Girl Scout killings

Lawmen pursue a substantial lead from wedding photos found near Camp Scott where three Girl Scouts aged 8 to 10 were slain on June 13. Crime bureau spokesman Jeff Laird says the three women pictured are innocent and the photos were released by the bureau.

Governor stays clear of Ortiz bribery case in New Mexico

Gov. Jerry Apodaca said he will not decide whether to press on with bribery and conspiracy charges against Rudy Ortiz. The New Mexico Supreme Court dismissed indictments against Ortiz and Charles Davis for improprieties in grand jury operations. Ortiz resigned as Employment Security Commission director after the indictment. Attorney General Toney Anaya said he intends to pursue the case, while Apodaca distanced himself, calling it Anaya's problem.

Forests Reopen After Rain Threat Ended

Lincoln and Gila National Forests reopen to full public use after recent rains. Fire danger led to Sunday closures, first time Lincoln NF closed since 1970. Campfire and smoking restrictions remain in effect, US Forest Service spokesman said.
