Firefighters advanced burnout operations on the west side of the Little Bear fire as of Thursday, with 42 995 acres burned and containment at 60 percent. Fire information officer Rico Smith said crews removed unburned fuel, expected containment to rise after burnout completion, aided by humidity and light winds.
Gov. Susana Martinez administration rejects delaying grades for over 800 public schools. Las Cruces Sun-News reports the Public Education Department will release the A-F grades within 30 days, with spokesman Larry Behrens stating no postponement.

A statewide burn ban covers New Mexico's 33 counties restricting smoking fireworks campfires open burning and open fires. Effective June 12 the ban comes from the State Forestry Division citing high fire danger due to warm temperatures low humidity high winds and dry fuels. It responds to activity in the Gila National Forest and the Little Bear fire near Ruidoso.
The County Commission unanimously approves a rezone from industrial to agricultural for a 65 acre parcel at Navajo Road and Wichita Road State Highway 2 with 10 acres rezoned in 2006 and 2009 additions. A variance to setback requirements is also requested as part of the action.
