Mission site discovered at Picuris Pueblo in New Mexico
The stone foundation of the first Spanish mission, built in 1631, was uncovered during road work near Picuris Pueblo, 56 miles northeast of Santa Fe. Laguna Indian Rapheal Lockwood found the base as crews leveled land for the new Picuris Museum and Training Center set to open July 19. Governor Alfred Rael noted the mission’s exact location had long been a pueblo legend.
