Alanis S. Stein 34 was convicted in Miami Beach for lock picking a mansion. He appealed as bond of 7000 dollars was set, but he borrowed a lock picking tool from a deputy sheriff and opened the desk to post bond and leave.
A new Air Force Association chapter at Vandenberg in California will be named after Dr. Robert H. Goddard the late Father of American Rocketry. The Roswell Museum honors him with exhibits and a Life magazine featured Roswell visit spot. Mrs. Goddard approved using her husband’s name in a letter to the chapter president.
In Zurich three Lao princes from pro Western Premier Boun Oum neutralist Souvanna Phouma and pro Communist Samhananvong agreed to form a national union government named by King Savang Vathana. They endorsed unifying the three armies into one force and pledged neutrality and a cease fire while continuing talks on power sharing. No date was set.
President Moise Tshombe of Katanga was freed after two months as he arrived at the Leopoldville premier’s residence for a news conference. Congolese leader Gen. Joseph Mobutu accompanied him and declared him free to reporters.
Grants Mayor F B Ted Howden will join the district attorney staff July 1. Howden opened a Grants law office in 1958 with Hannett Hannett and Cronish. Elected in April 1900 he serves a two year term as mayor of Grants.
Three men identified as Max Cornelius Albertsville Alabama Kenneth Wisecap Lydon Ohio and Frankie Stennett Greenwood South Carolina received 30 day jail terms after pleading guilty to stealing gasoline from Fritz Waxler Service Station on Second Street and Virginia Avenue east of Roswell. State Police arrested them nearby and brought them to Roswell where Judge Harry Puryear imposed the sentences.
Sen Dennis Chavez informs Sen Mike Monroney that he seeks to amend S 1703 to amend the Federal Air Ports Act. He argues the bill as written adversely affects New Mexico communities and other depressed areas by lacking local capital or federal aid provisions.
Navajo Tribal Police investigated the blaze that leveled a 30 by 60 foot Red Lake Grocery in Red Lake near the New Mexico border. The property was owned by Gilbert Ortega and located across from the proposed town of Navajo New Mexico.
Leonard denies political influence while House subcommittee probes New Mexico road work. Jack Adams, under inquiry, punched United Press photographer Ed Alley after a picture was taken in the committee room. Blatnik intervened as Adams resumed testimony on the federal aid highway program and related contracts.
New Mexico Engineers President Frank Bridges asked Rep. Tom Morris for a transcript of House public works subcommittee hearings into highway construction. The society aims to study possible misconduct or ethics violations by engineers with road contractors in New Mexico.

At the Zone VI meeting in Roswell yesterday the New Mexico Soil and Water Conservation Districts reelected R. G. Bird as chairman R. L. Davis as vice chairman and O. F. Crawford as secretary treasurer for 1961 About 50 people attended and next year’s meeting site will be announced by R. G. Bird.
Coleman Foley, an Irish immigrant rancher near Pleasanton, California, donates the first private gift to the U.S. Food for Peace program. He will provide 50 tons of wheat annually for four years for hungry people overseas, with Greece named as the initial recipient.
Judy Steed, 19, a 1960 Roswell High School graduate, will compete in the Miss Roswell Pageant July 8 at Pearson Auditorium. She plans to earn a bachelor’s degree at Eastern New Mexico University and later attend the University of New Mexico law school.
Washington AP H E Leonard a New Mexico Highway Commission member says he did ask contractors for political contributions before joining the commission and was active in Burroughs re election effort. He denies any coercion or friction from politics affecting the commission while Mechem and Burroughs political ties are noted.
President Kennedy named Frank D. Reeves a 45 year old Washington attorney to the three member Board of Commissioners that run Washington DC. If confirmed by the Senate Reeves would be the first Negro on the board. He currently serves as a special assistant to the President and was elected last year to the Democratic National Committee the first Negro in that role.
Storms and floods across scattered Turkish sections during the night claimed 14 lives. Lightning caused 11 deaths, including five children, as damage spread through affected areas.
Three Roswell boys aged six eight and nine admitted entering South Hill Baptist Church last night and ransacking the nursery. Officers found extensive damage including broken piano hammers obscene words painted on walls scattered furniture and glue on floors. Police cited them into Juvenile Court though they were younger than usual for such proceedings. The boys could not justify the acts and were not identified until court appearances.
