Energy Department seeks NRC licensing for WIPP disposal plan

Deputy Energy Secretary John O Leary urged Congress to give NRC authority to license the Waste Isolation Pilot Project near Carlsbad. He argued licensing would ensure independent health safety assurances and usable experience for future waste storage projects. He also urged delaying action on NRC licensing bills and noted potential plans to license away from reactor storage if studies justify it. NM Senator Domenici expressed conditional support. NM Senator Schmitt urged NM residents have rights over waste disposal if safety cannot be assured.
