Hester Delivers 2445 Pounds of Scrap Rubber to Drive

Singer Sewing Machine Company Robbed of $123

One hundred twenty three dollars in currency was stolen from the Singer Sewing Machine Company at 423 North Main around 12 30 p m Saturday, per manager N S Calendar. Police had no trace of the thief as of last night. The money vanished from a desk drawer while the attendant was away. Similar thefts have occurred recently at the Nehi Bottling Company and the Wilson Furniture Store.

British Submarines Sink Three Japanese Supply Ships

British submarines attacked Japan's supply route from the China Sea to the Bay of Bengal and sank three large cargo ships in the Malacca Straits between Malaya and Sumatra. One sub torpedoed the largest vessel in a three-ship convoy, another later sank two more big cargo ships. This may mark one of the first United Nations naval counter blows since Japan overran Malaya and Sumatra.

Heat Wave Continues With Fifth 100-Degree Day

The weather bureau reports Saturday marked the fifth straight day with 100 degrees or higher. No relief is expected as Sunday is forecast to stay near Saturday’s heat. Temperatures rose from 100 Tuesday to 102 Wednesday and Thursday, 103 Friday, then 102 Saturday.

Formal Opening of Yucca Draws Praise of Patrons

Patrons who attended the formal opening of the rebuilt Yucca Theatre Friday night praised the appearance and the rapid reconstruction after the April 12 fire. The completed building opened six weeks and four days after government permission was obtained, with night shows starting one month and two days after approval. A few small odds and ends remain, to be finished in a few days. The big Yucca neon sign in front was built locally by Bugger Brown.

Fierce Battles Near Sevastopol and Kharkov Mark Year of Red War

Moscow dispatch reports fierce battles across Sevastopol in Crimea and on the Kharkov front as the Soviet Union nears the end of its first year of resistance to Hitler’s 60 day invasion. Soviet high command said fighting continued around Sevastopol and along the Donets as German forces pressed to breach lines north of Sevastopol and advance toward the Caucasus. Moscow also noted new Russian counterattacks on fronts west and northwest of the capital amid a day of heavy combat.

Continental Air Lines Will Not Curtail Operations

Olan Wooldridge, local Continental Air Lines manager, says two roundtrips daily between Denver and El Paso will continue on current schedules for passengers mail and cargo. Previously one of the two flights was to be cut, but both will operate as is until further notice. The Albuquerque El Paso direct flight is the one slated for discontinuation, not the Roswell Hoots Carlsbad route.
