Four houses on Main Street were destroyed as cement walk contracts proceeded. The blaze or collapse prompted investigations into contractor duties and municipal maintenance. Community residents assess damage and displaced families seek temporary shelter.
Fire last night destroyed several buildings on Main Street between First and War West side after starting in Duff & Davisons second hand store. Four buildings were ruins within thirty minutes with Mrs. Graham and Miss Clyde Rogers escaping. Insurance covered about half losses. volunteers saved furniture and some contents. Water came from a ditch. no wind aided flames.
Chicago June 21 The Republican National Convention opened in the Coliseum with 8500 seats and a sea of delegates. Theodore Roosevelt was named as a leading figure as temporary officers were elected and Porto Rico and the Philippines seated. Senators Spooner Blythe and Lodge pressed tariff revision and the platform drafting as Ballots and committees began to take shape.
The speech extols Roosevelt and the Republican program with heavy praise and figures. It emphasizes the party as a durable, principled body led by Lincoln and McKinley ideals, urging renewed public confidence in the election and stressing consistency, loyalty, and good government.
The Portland mine in Victor Colorado reopened with a non-union crew as directed by the directors. A mining board evaluated orecards from the mine owners association, while a small workforce returned to jobs. Several executives departed for the Mescalero district to arrange smelter placements.

Rail tickets to points north offered with notice of a meeting at the Roswell Club tonight to discuss Rail Rooms road proposition. Chamber of Commerce call, all invited, meeting promptly at 8 o clock. The Roswell Record reports travel and local moves including Mrs Stone and J R Morrow heading to Los Angeles with family and friend notes on Pecos Texas and Artesia relocation.
A wolf is displayed in the Roswell Wool and Hide Company exhibition room on 4th Street. The display draws curious visitors and local interest as part of the company's showcasing event.
J. J. Williamson of New York Life Insurance Co and Willis Ford of Mutual Life depart last evening for southern points in the interest of their respective companies.
Music teacher Miss Hall departs last evening for a business trip. Messrs. Cole and Kirby of Picacho are visiting in the city. Mrs. Millard Stone and Mrs. Morrow have gone to California for an extended stay.
Mrs Payton is expected to arrive this afternoon after returning from a trip to California. Her arrival is noted without additional details on time or location.
