Blaze threatens explosives near Los Alamos site

A forest fire near Bandelier National Monument has burned about 4000 acres and moved toward the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. Firefighters, slurry bombers, and helicopters battled the flames as authorities said no major explosives were in immediate danger unless winds shift. A National Parks Service worker Juan Aldaz died battling the blaze.

City weighs big water and sewer rate hike

Roswell officials consider raising water and sewer charges by more than 100 percent to fund system improvements. The Water and Sewer Committee backs bonds totaling 14.5 million dollars for Roswell and Roswell Industrial Air Center water system upgrades, new Kerr Well Field water delivery, and a new sewage treatment plant. Mayor Jerry N. Smith says action could come in September with changes likely in October, noting no rate rise in a decade.

Waste disposal costs push up nuclear energy prices

Washington AP reports that the cost of managing radioactive waste raises the price per kilowatt hour for nuclear plants. Rep. Leo Ryan and three subcommittee members toured Hanford to press for a concrete waste disposal cost figure, with ERDA officials citing unofficial estimates of one mill per kilowatt hour.

Lincoln National Forest Closes Amid Extreme Fire Danger

The Lincoln National Forest and all national forests in New Mexico and Arizona will close at 8 a.m. due to extreme fire danger. Rangers said roads camps and picnic grounds stay open, but no roadside parking or hiking trails. Reopening hinges on conditions and is unpredictable.

Enterprise conducts first manned piggyback test flight

At Edwards Air Force Base California two astronauts test flaps and speed brake on the piggyback Space Shuttle Enterprise during a 54 minute flight atop a modified Boeing 747. Haise and Fullerton perform flutter tests while the craft is carried at 209 miles per hour over the Dryden Flight Research Center.

Giant radio telescope rises near Magdalena

A Y shaped rail system is being built to support 27 210 ton movable antennas for the National Astronomy Observatory. The project aims to finish by 1980 at a cost of 78 million dollars. Antennas mounted on transporter cars will run along about 13 mile arms in the Plains of San Agustin 90 miles southwest of Albuquerque. Seven antennas are active now with more to come this month, forming a surface equivalent to a 425 foot single dish.

World's largest fully steerable radio telescope in Bonn

Scientists say the Max Planck Institute in Bonn West Germany operates the world’s largest fully steerable radio telescope. Radio telescopes gather radio waves from stars planets and the Milky Way and use computers to create photograph like images and maps. They can estimate surface and atmospheric temperatures of planets from the waves.
