Court Halts Toxaphene Spraying in Canadian River Watershed

A district court issued a temporary restraining order banning toxaphene use against caterpillars in northeast New Mexico’s Canadian River watershed. Judge H V Payne ordered eight ranchers to appear and show cause why the spraying should not be permanently enjoined. The dispute pits ranchers seeking to protect range grass against conservationists concerned about river pollution and fish kills. The Interior and Agriculture Departments have limited or banned toxaphene, while dibrom is proposed as a safer, effective alternative. Time is short for action to protect range grass and water supplies for Texas Panhandle cities.
