State District Judge Ross Sanchez ordered Estevan Apodaca to repay victims of the La Familia Grande pyramid scheme with up to 30000 dollars in restitution. He set an August 1 sentencing date for remaining penalties while noting restitution details will be finalized at the hearing.
The New Mexico Supreme Court suspends Espanola Municipal Judge Charles Maestas for 90 days with pay, pending investigation into allegations of pressuring a woman for sex in exchange for softer traffic penalties. No charges filed. Judicial Standards Commission to probe potential conduct violations. Maestas had publicly supported the probe.
Two Mexican women died while crossing the desert near Deming New Mexico. Amparo Montellano Jimenez 50 from Zacatecas and Alisa Vendura Bautista 20 from San Juan Mixtepec were found dead and presumed dehydrated. Border officials launched a campaign to warn migrants about desert dangers.
Frank C. Hibben, famed UNM anthropology professor and Sandia Man cave excavator, died in his sleep at 91 in Albuquerque. Services set at First Presbyterian Church. He directed Maxwell Museum from 1961 to 1971 and donated millions for the Hibben Center and annual student grants. His career spanned field work in Africa and collaborations with Leakeys.
