Bloody Sunday in Havana Deepens Cuban Unrest

In Havana on June 18, a two day riot by the ABC Society left 12 dead and about 69 wounded. A heavy guard surrounded Emergency Hospital amid fears of a storming as violence spiked during a political march through Prado Bonileite. Reports of leaders burned alive were denied, while the parade resumed and the city faced a possible delay to December elections.

Governor Urges Chaves County to Raise World Fair Quota

Governor A W Hockenhull appeals to Willis Ford Rolla Hinkle Hiram Dow R H McCune and Guy Nickson to organize and raise Chaves County’s 500 quota for New Mexico’s exhibit at the World’s Fair in Chicago. Drought relief projects start in Chaves County today

Approximately 150 men from rural districts of Chaves County began federal drought relief road work with a 390 worker quota over two shifts through June 20. Payroll around $10,000 weekly, funded from Santa Fe, with Lea Rowland overseeing payments. Wages 40 cents an hour for common labor and $1 for skilled labor. Foremen named for several roads, project manager Lea Rowland directed operations.

Santa Fe June 18 Geo Powers of Bernalillo county received a conditional pardon today from Governor A W Hockenhull. Bowers was sentenced in October 1933 to serve six to ten years.

Car Stolen Here Found at Artesia

Sheriff John C Peck recovered a 1928 Chevrolet touring car owned by J F Jarrell of East Grand Plains that was stolen from in front of Binns Mercantile Company last Thursday night. It was abandoned at the home of a colored man in Artesia who reported to Artesia officers. No thief has been traced. the colored resident was not implicated per Sheriff Peck.
