Glider Pilot Training Open to Men Aged 17 to 36

Men aged seventeen to thirty six may enlist for glider pilot training if they pass qualifying tests. Applicants must meet Army General Classification Test, Aviation Cadet 10-A or 10-B scores and the glider pilot physical standards. Selected graduates receive Second Lieutenant commissions while others become Staff Sergeants on flying status.

Lay Off Police And Firemen In Ohio's Capital

Columbus mayor Floyd F. Green laid off half the police and firemen amid a municipal financial crisis.178 officers and 190 firefighters were cut while other departments also faced staffing reductions. Green rejected pleas to halt the order and said more money must be raised to restore full service. Voters had rejected a 2.5 mill levy to cover a 1942 shortage.

Oil shortage warning for Atlantic states in June

Petroleum coordinator Harold L. Sexes warned that heating oil supplies cannot be guaranteed for next winter in the Atlantic seaboard. He urged easterners who heat with oil to switch to coal immediately. Stocks in the east at the end of May were 55 percent below the prior year.

Russians Claim Germans On Defense In Kharkov Front

Soviet dispatches from Moscow on June 16 report a three day German attempt to cross a key Kharkov river was repelled by Russian hill fortifications, forcing Germans back to the defensive. Firemen extinguished a grass fire at noon in a vacant lot located at 511 East Reed with no damage reported. The quick response prevented spread and authorities noted no injuries.

Livestock Interests Face Modified War Truck Rules

Albuquerque June 15 Undersecretary of the interior John J Dempsey said in a Washington wire that the 75 percent return load truck rule for livestock growers would be modified and objectionable features dropped. There will be no restrictions to hamper movement of livestock and other perishable agricultural products. The New Mexico Cattle Growers Association executive committee opposed the truck load restrictions and gasoline rationing for cattlemen at Hot Springs last week.

Powerful American Air Fleet Hits At Axis Warships

Party Honors Navy Man In Kenna With VFW Induction

About 200 people gathered in Kenna to honor Hugh Burton Beavers home on furlough from the Navy after serving aboard the U S S Marblehead. The event included a chicken fry, participation by the Portales State Guard Company and Portales high school band, and Beavers was inducted into the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enlisted October 11, 1940.
