Tecumseh, a Shawnee leader, sought to unite many American Indian tribes into a strong confederation to resist white encroachment. He traveled vast distances east of the Mississippi and, with his brother Tenskwatawa the Shawnee Prophet, formed the largest united group of nations among the Indians.
A concise historical note explains Prophetstown and the Tecumseh led confederation's attempts to resist land loss, their defeats in 1811 and 1813, and the lasting legacy of Tecumseh born 1768 in Ohio. It notes his peace overtures, death in battle, and enduring honor in towns, schools, and a Navy submarine.
Opened in 2004 the museum in Washington D C showcases Tecumseh Chief Joseph Crazy Horse Sitting Bull and other leaders. Artifacts from Cherokee Shawnee Sioux Hopi and other tribes are displayed with ceremonies performances and educational activities celebrating American Indian heritage.
This issue highlights a chapter from 50 American Heroes Every Kid Should Meet by Dennis Denenberg and Lorraine Roscoe. The publisher offers order options at heroes4us.com and recommends Tecumseh: Shooting Star of the Shawnee by Dwight Jon Zimmerman at libraries.
The Mini Page credits Dennis Denenberg a former teacher principal superintendent and university professor and Lorraine Roscoe a champion of heroes for assistance with this issue.
