New Mexico Boys State Session Opens With 307 Delegates

The 23rd annual New Mexico Boys State begins at New Mexico Military Institute with 307 high school seniors arriving after 6 30 am bugle call. Delegates from Roswell Corpus include students from Roswell High Goddard High NM Military Institute Artesia Capitan Carrizozo Corona Dexter Fr Sumner Hagerman Hondo Lake Arthur Ruidoso among others as they undertake flag, chapel, calisthenics and city level elections and governance training led by officials from Roswell NMMI and the American Legion. Gov. David F Cargo is among visiting speakers as the week advances toward city county and state elections.

Nixon appoints panel to study campus unrest causes

President Nixon created the President Commission on Campus Unrest to identify causes of violence on campuses and propose methods to resolve grievances while protecting academic freedom. Roswell Maiden Linda Sloan Crowned Maid of Cotton

Ninteen year old Linda Louise Sloan of Roswell is Chaves County's Maid of Cotton, crowned during ceremonies Saturday night at the Roswell Inn. She receives a $500 college scholarship and will compete statewide in July at Ruidoso. Runner up Bonnie Barber, also 19 from Roswell, is named. Nixon calls for steps by all government levels to reduce campus violence and urges university leaders to help control and prevent it.

Brazil to free prisoners as ransom for German envoy kidnap

The Brazilian government agreed to release 40 political prisoners and publish a leftist document urging rural guerrilla war as ransom for West German Ambassador Enren fried von Holleben, kidnapped by terrorists.
