Russians Hurl Germans Back In Fiercest Fighting

Soviet high command reports major German drives against Sevastopol and Kharkov repelled with great enemy losses. Front-line dispatches estimate 150000 enemy dead and wounded last week. Soviet counter-attacks and annihilation of parachute troops marked a heavy offensive at Sevastopol and Kharkov fronts.

Rubber Collection Starts Tomorrow in Roswell

Mayor Hall called for unqualified cooperation in the nationwide scrap rubber drive beginning tomorrow and ending June 30. Citizens to haul scrap to filling stations for one cent a pound. oil firms to forward to the government with no profit. Continental stations already collecting. Dr. G. D. Allen and Cecil Naramore contributing. Roosevelt urged reduced driving and speed to conserve rubber for aircraft and tanks in the war effort.

Six or Seven Of The Big Bombers Forced Down In Turkey

United States four motor bombers joined the war in Europe bombing the Mu Romanian oil fields that fuel Germany. Six or seven bombers forced to land in Turkey while returning to secret bases, with a savage Libyan desert battle nearby as British and Axis armor clash 138 miles from the coast.

H M Dow of Roswell, chairman of the national conference of petroleum regulatory authorities, urged rapid synthetic rubber production to reduce gasoline rationing. He argued genuine rubber output would argue against rationing in plentiful areas and warned scrap rubber efforts depend on refinery and oil-well production, impacting fuel supplies. He cautioned that forecasts for synthetic rubber by 194x were uncertain and urged urgent action.

Army Tests Prove Substitutes For Strategic Metals

The War Department announced that the Army Air Forces and manufacturers have advanced substitution of non strategic materials for aircraft. Training planes now use wood fuel tanks and plastics, plywood, and reduced aluminum and magnesium. Aluminum is eliminated on one trainer. other designs cut aluminum by 565 pounds and magnesium by pounds per plane. More trainer types are being updated as engineering and production allow. Woodworking plants are subcontracting large scale, and new skilled labor has been tapped. Continued on page four.

Blazing Battle Near Tobruk Drives Axis Forces

Cairo June 13 UP A blazing desert battle raged just 13 miles from Tobruk as British imperial arms held their ground and inflicted heavy damage on Axis armor sweeping from Bir Hacheim. RAF aircraft blasted bases as ground forces clashed around El Adem Acroma and El Racem with fierce fighting continuing in scorching heat.

President Roosevelt merges all government information units into one agency named the Office of War Information. Elmer Davis leads the agency with authority to issue directives, eliminate duplication, and streamline war information. Dempsey to Visit Roswell After Washington Return

Dempsey, a formal candidate for the Democratic governor nomination, will be in Roswell after returning from Washington to meet Chaves County residents and discuss campaign issues. He will resign as interior secretary upon arrival in Washington and restart his campaign after June 20. Meanwhile Senator Dennis Chavez endorsed Judge Bryan G Johnson for the Democratic nomination and urged a party house cleaning, as Johnson campaign activity began with a Roswell club led by George T Harris and Lake Frazier as temporary chairmen.
